Reading books in verse have the potential to improve verbal skills and memory, support discussing emotions and improve critical thinking. In fact, I take it a step further and seek out books in verse that are also di-verse. Not only can books be rich in words and language but also in color, controversy and critical dynamics. Take for example the text, The Good Braider by Terry Fairish, a story of a teen moving from Sudan to Portland, Maine, learning to navigate the ways of America as she braids together strands of life.
